| This three minute movie, recorded in Villanueva de Tapia (Spain) in 2004, demonstrates a décima IN ENGLISH with a rhyming Spanish translation, performed in the rumba style with my homemade plastic drums, which fall apart at the end of the song. The characteristic "tonada de los presos" melody and the structure are borrowed from "Tawiri", a song performed by the Cuban folkoric group Yoruba Andabo. The chorus is from Calderon de la Barca's "La vida es sueño", a famous 17th century play partially written in décima form. | |

You might want to see the site Cuba Ala Décima and also La décima tiene nombre de mujer.
He aquí un ejemplo que escribí para cantar en la tonada de los presos, la melodía más
común para la décima en guaguancó. Conservo la tipografía que utilizé para resaltar las
rimas:
Hace tiempo que quisiera
For a long time I’ve been wanting
una décima cantar a fine décima to sing
en la rumba pa’ gozar in the rumba for its swing
su cadencia placentera that cadence so pure and haunting
que proviene de la era a structure, complex and daunting
de Calderón de la Barca from Iberia's golden age
y que más luego se embarca on the farm and on the stage
al gran mundo pan-hispano wherever people speak Spanish
donde se hable el castellano décima will never vanish
la espinela es el monarca. from the tongue or from the page.
Ciao.
